We need your support to be successful in these efforts. We need your pledge. We need your time, energy and wisdom. By itself, your $25 each month may not make much of a difference, but your $25 added together with donations from other people of conscience has an impact. It means more food for the hungry, more medicine for people suffering under the extreme costs of health care, more programming for the children. It means changing lives for the better.
Our mission is to bring Compassion and Wholeness to the urban poor of Birmingham.
We carry out our mission in a variety of ways. Through Assistance Ministries we operate a daily feeding program, distribute food boxes, and provide financial assistance in meeting the costs of utilities and housing. Through our Children's Program we offer after-school care and a summer day camp for children in the fourth through the eighth grade. Through our Joe Rush Center for Urban Mission we do exterior house painting for low-income elderly and disabled persons. In partnership with Kairos Prison Ministry we work in a maximum security prison of the State of Alabama (Donaldson Correctional Facility) with men on death row. Through our Academy for Action Formation we provide opportunities for persons to live out their faithfulness in the world.
OUR VISION
We have a vision: to grow in ministry to our community. We want to expand the breadth of our current programs and increase the number of programs we offer as well.
In order to realize that vision, we must increase the number of volunteers who donate their time to Urban Ministry. We welcome volunteers and donations at any level. Anything you can give helps us toward our goal of improving lives. We encourage you to become a supporter of Compassion and Wholeness by participating in our giving program.
If you want to be involved in inner-city ministry with people of low-income, we have volunteer opportunities for you, your colleagues, church, or Sunday School class. Whatever your interests, we can find a time and a way to put your skills to work in ministry.
The Reverend Tom Duley, Executive Director of Urban Ministry, and The Reverend Mike Harper, Director of Development and Volunteer Recruitment, are available to speak to Churches, Sunday School classes, or any other groups that are interested in inner-city ministry, the work of Urban Ministry or other related topics. If you are interested, please contact them by phone or email.
