Adopt-a-Home Program

Through the Joe Rush Program Urban Ministry does exterior house painting for low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners in the Birmingham area. The Adopt-a-Home program is one way that Urban Ministry recruits volunteers and financial support to carry out the work of the Joe Rush Program.

Through the Adopt-Home program Urban Ministry offers churches and church groups the opportunity to take a flexible and self-directed approach in a local hands-on mission project.

Urban Ministry has designed the Adopt-a-Home program to make a hands-on mission project available to churches, youth groups, Sunday School classes, Singles, and other groups within the local church.

Urban Ministry will do all of the necessary administrative work prior to the start of the project. We will take applications, make sure the homeowner is qualified, do site visits and homeowner interviews. We will also make sure that the homeowner is aware of the group that will be working on their home and of the work schedule of the group.

Adopt-a-Home Agreement  

• The church/group agrees to do the work of scraping, priming and painting the house that is identified for them by Urban Ministry until the project is completed.
• The church/group determines its own work schedule. Painting projects are done from March 1 st through November 15 th . The church/group agrees to complete their project sometime during this time-frame. Most of our projects take 4 to 5 days with enthusiastic work groups of 10-15 volunteers.

• The church/group agrees to purchase all supplies that are necessary to complete the job of painting the house. This includes, brushes, rollers, primer, paint, etc. The approximate cost is $500 although that will vary from house to house.
