A Ministry of Compassion and Wholeness

Homelessness Prevention

We currently offer two homelessness prevention programs:

Emergency Solutions (ESG) is funded by HUD through a City Development Block Grant. It allows us to provide some rent and utility assistance on a short-term emergency basis.

Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing (HPRP) is funded with a grant from HUD administered by JCCEO (Jefferson County Committee for Equal Opportunity)

To be eligible for HPRP assistance, you must:

1) be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
2) have recently lost a job due to the economic recession
3) live in Birmingham City limits
4) meet the low-income requirement for your family size

Homelessness Management Information Systems (HMIS) Continuum of Care

Urban Ministry also participates in the HMIS Continuum of Care System in partnership with One Roof Alabama. By offering these state-sponsored photo IDs to our clients, we allow them to access other important social services including healthcare, food stamps, housing programs, and more.

What is HPRP?

HPRP provides homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing assistance for families who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless. This can include rent assistance, security deposits, utility payments, legal assistance, moving and storage costs assistance, and temporary housing. Our full-time staff social worker works with families through the mid-term (up to 3 months or more) to achieve long-term stability.
