Recently Becky Wadley, our Urban Kids Coordinator, asked our participants these questions.  Their answers are indicative of the work we do daily.

Memorable Experience You Have Had at Urban Kids?

When we went to the Cahaba River and got to swim and fish in it--It's like we were fishermen.

Something Important You Have Learned Through Urban Kids?

To have more respect for myself.

To always talk slowly, say nice words, and don't start fights.

You can do much more if you let someone else help or work with you.

To read once a day so I can be better than what I am.

Ways That Urban Kids Has Helped You Grow?

By showing love and care.

I have learned how to be a gentleman.

I am now a stronger person.

I am a better person than when I started.

WHAT WE DO

"Urban Kids," the Children's Program at Urban Ministry, seeks to provide spiritual and character development, encourage academic achievement, and offer various enrichment activities.

We do this at our facility in West End, just across the street from the Hemphill Elementary School, where most of our participants attend. Our program meets Monday-Thursday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. during the school year. We also have several weeks of Day Camp in the summer.

Throughout the year we provide enrichment activities and field trips for all in the program.

We invite all individuals who are interested in participating in activities with the young people in our community by mentoring, tutoring, playing, or leading various programs including singing, dancing, drawing, painting, and more! Some of our volunteers serve weekly, some twice a month, and others on a monthly basis. Our goal is to have a "one on one" relationship with all of our children so that they may know God's love in tangible and helpful ways.

Please contact us if you are interested in being a part of Urban Kids by calling us at 205/781-0517 or e-mailing the coordinator Becky Wadley at bwadley@bham.rr.com.

Lewis White, one of our most faithful volunteers, writes of his experience working with the Urban Kids:

Memorable Experience

All that I have experienced with these young people reinforces my concept of what being a volunteer really means.  Being in contact with them gives my life a more profound purpose.

Something Important I Have Learned

I have learned that all young people are not headed to the graveyard or to prison.  Urban Kids, the organization, gives me hope that this city's future is not as dismal as I had thought in days past.  These young people can be achievers of the highest order.  All they require is to be loved and pushed in the right direction.

Ways That Urban Kids Helped You Grow

I have grown by learning that the dedicated volunteers working with parents and other staff people can work wonders with these young people who so desperately need us.
